The cold press process of making soaps is a natural and traditional method that involves the use of oils, lye and water to create soap bars. Here is a general explanation:
2. Next, a solution of lye (sodium hydroxide) and water is prepared. Lye is a caustic substance that, when combined with oils, triggers a chemical reaction called saponification which turns oils into soap.
3. The lye solution is then added to the oils and mixed together until they reach a specific consistency called “trace”.
4. Once at trace, other ingredients such as essential oils, herbs or clays can be added to the soap mixture, depending on the desired properties of the soap.
5. The mixture is then poured into molds and left to harden for several days, during this time the saponification process continues.
6. After the bars have hardened, they are removed from the molds and left to cure for several weeks. This allows the excess water to evaporate and the soap bars to become harder, longer-lasting and milder.
After curing, the soap bars are ready to be cut and packaged for sale.
One of the main benefits of cold press soaps is that they retain all the natural glycerin produced during the saponification process which is a humectant (a substance that helps to retain moisture), this makes the soaps more moisturizing and gentle to the skin.
